Wonderful Boutique Hotel in the Heart of Downtown Chicago

This is my third visit to The St. Clair Hotel - Magnificent Mile, and I'm sure it won't be my last. I first learned of the hotel in2018 and stayed for a quaint staycation with my husband. We then returned two years later for an anniversary stay since we were in the middle of a pandemic and didn't feel comfortable leaving our city. I just completed my third stay in a solo staycation for an early Mother's Day gift and it was fabulous. I love how close the hotel is to everything that I need to do in order to be okay (food, massages, shopping) but it's also a great centralized location for visiting some of the city's landmarks if I felt up to it. As a native Chicagoan, I'll save the touristy spots for outside visitors, but being just up the street from the Art Institue, and just west of the lakefront made quick visits possible and easy on the pockets. The rooms are boutique, meaning they aren't there to make you feel as if you're in a condo, but they have everything you may need in order to be satisfied with an overnight stay. The rooms were clean and free from issues. If I did have an issue in any visits, they were attended to immediately. I look forward to visiting more. I will say, the hotel does the very best it can to make sure that all guests feel safe and secure, however with all things, you can't always control people, including what they indulge in while in their hotel rooms. If anything that has been enjoyed leaves an odor, calling the front desk will handle the situation.

I reserved my hotel room online through the actual company website. Booking was user-friendly. I was under the impression I booked and paid. I arrived at the hotel and they asked for my payment. I still have to double-check this transaction. The hotel looks like the picture, but the photographer was on his game, meaning he made those pictures look dreamy. The hotel looked exactly the picture but not really. The Lobby, the front desk area, and the rooms are micro-sized. It was explained to me it was because it was a boutique hotel. Yeah, I'm not convinced that in the description of a boutique hotel, that the size of the rooms are smaller. The actual number of rooms is smaller than a standard hotel property. Additionally a boutique offers special amenities, with this in mind considering the St. Claire this is laughable. The hotel was clean. Not sure about parking (we used Uber everywhere). Covid procedures preventing daily room cleaning. You were able to request fresh daily linen and towels. They were able to provide plastic ware. Our room was "deluxe" (insert air quotes) - mini-fridge and microwave. I have to say this - don’t laugh - The sink is big enough to wash only one of your hands at a time. I think the sinks in my 1:12 scale miniature houses are bigger. The location was prime, middle of downtown and The Magnificent Mile. The staff was professional, not friendly but professional. I encountered a front desk concierge that was super helpful and one not so helpful. The front desk concierge was not helpful, she also wasn’t forward-thinking or problem solver oriented. We were granted an early check-in -before 3 PM - which was VERY appreciated - we arrived early A.M. (Thank you so much) We were not granted late check out; I even offered to pay. I was told they don’t offer late check-out and that the hotel was booked. I asked if housekeeping could clean our room last. The concierge said housekeeping checks every room out at noon, and then they clean. I explained that I was working and needed to stay a bit later. I asked what if I said what if I booked another night. She explained the accommodations needed to be completed by noon. They offered a room at full price, which is more than I paid per day initially. I ended up booking online through a third party - for a full night's stay. I left promptly at 3 PM the time I promised. With the state of the world and the suffering of the travel industry, which is now ramping back up, I would think, as a boutique hotel, returning customers and referrals would be key. I honestly think I could have been better accommodated. I will not return to this hotel ever again. I feel comfortable posting this review because it is all truthful without being malicious, along with my off-the-wall humor. If the hotel is interested in giving me a full refund for my stay - I'm open to it. I will keep you posted - if this issue is positively rectified. Randomly Nevada

Great location, Incredible Service
review-img-alt

I wasn't expecting much given the low price, but I can honestly say the service level here was better than almost anywhere I've ever stayed. The staff was incredible - so friendly and helpful, and they made an effort to get to know me. The only challenge I had was that my room was quite smoky from the previous guest, but once I told them, they quickly remedied that and moved me to a better room. As a native of Chicago, I can confidently say the location can't be beat for those visiting. Some reviews mentioned the noise from ambulances. Unfortunately, you'll find that with all the downtown hotels because of the nearby hospitals. Locals hate it too, though it wasn't bad in my room. If you're concerned about it, I recommend always traveling with a white noise machine. Thanks again to the wonderful staff who made this a memorable stay!

Great Location, Bad Hotel
review-img-alt

The Good: Located a block off the magnificent mile, close to cheap parking. The Bad: This is an older building, that's been renovated extensively, unfortunately the upkeep is poor. The floors were filthy, black dirt along the edges of walls that wasn't being cleaned. Every time I went to put my shoes on after getting out of the shower and walking the short distance to the bed, my feet were gross. Our room was a standard king, and it was TINY, which isn't necessarily a deal breaker for the cost and location the size was alright, just be aware if you're not a fan of small spaces or are a bigger person that the bathroom has only a few square feet of standing space and you have to edge between the foot of the bed and wall to reach the other side of the room. I see reviews from a month ago about the weed smell, and that's still going on. Elevators were the worst offender, our room smelled fine. Overall, I'd prefer to pay more and stay elsewhere. If you're under 30 it's a great budget hotel for visiting the city, but if you can afford to stay elsewhere I would recommend it.
