TripAdvisor Ratings

Clean, comfortable and quiet.
February 05, 2018

We enjoyed a comfortable and quiet night’s stay at Red Roof Inn Plus in Amherst. Our (upgraded) superior room was very clean, spacious and equipped with a comfortable king-size bed (complete with assorted labelled “hard” and “soft” pillows), mini fridge, microwave oven, room safe and large desk. The sink/ countertop and mirrors were outside the bathroom itself, which is a big plus for a couple getting ready at the same time. We stay at many hotels every year and Shawn, the front desk receptionist when we checked in, was one of the most genuinely pleasant, friendly and helpful we’ve ever encountered. She helped us in booking a taxi and when it was discovered that there was going to be a significant delay in it arriving, arranged for an alternative taxi company. Good value for the money, our experience at Red Roof Inn Plus in Amherst was a positive one and we would return here.

Good for the price

Went back to my college town to show family around. This hotel is very conveniently situated right off SUNY Buffalo North Campus. Nothing fancy but really worth the price. Clean and lots of parking. Ideal for anyone visiting the college.

Great clerk - bad room
January 02, 2018

Door lock mostly didn't work (it did once) from outside.....impossible to close door on way out - ceiling paint peeling - and for some completely unknown reason there was a washcloth tied around the showerhead.......Plus what? Afraid to find out what not pluss would be ! Desk clerk was very nice and helpful though....

Great location!

First time staying here. Booked via Hotwire. Great location to UB as I was in town for football game. Very clean room, mini-fridge, friendly front desk staff and was able to get rooms next to each other. Definitely would stay again for next game!

premium-room perk: ANTS!
November 06, 2017

We have stayed at this Red Roof Inn many times over the years, and had noticed a steady decline in quality with each successive stay. Our last visit was in 2013 or 2014, and our experience that time was so poor (condom and lube left on the floor by previous guests, for starters) that our stay was comped -- and we vowed never to return to the property. The issue has always, always been cleanliness. However, we recently had a last-minute need for a double room in the Amherst area and every other decent hotel was fully booked, so we very reluctantly decided to bite the bullet and book at the Red Roof Plus, which had plenty of vacancies. We'd read recent TA reviews which cited its cleanliness, so we figured maybe things had turned around in the past few years. Maybe the housekeeping staff had improved, or maybe management had more stringent checks of the rooms, but we figured we'd only be there for one night, so even if it turned out to be terrible, we could leave first thing in the morning (which we did -- see below). We decided to book a "premium" room because we felt that if any rooms would be marginally better, it would be the ones marked "premium." First issue: almost all of the premium rooms are on the first floor. How is having people above you considered "premium"? Yes, some people prefer to park their cars and not climb stairs to get to their room, so they might consider that a premium perk. But why not offer more second-floor premium rooms for those of us who would much rather climb stairs than have noisy upstairs neighbours? The room itself had gouged laminate floors, as though someone had taken a box cutter to them and randomly slashed them all over the place. The floors were also not clean, and were in need of a good mopping. There were carpet tiles under/around the beds. There were crumbs, hair and random detritus anywhere that a vacuum can't fit or didn't go -- between the fridge and the desk, beside/behind the toilet, under the beds, in every corner, between the beds and the nightstand, etc., suggesting -- at best -- a very cursory vacuuming had taken place. Weird splatters on the bathroom walls (pretty high up, too), on the outside of shower curtain and on the back of the main door, and dust on the higher surfaces (e.g., the shelf above the hangers). The "Love Your Linens" bedding the hotel advertises for its premium rooms just means there's a flat sheet, a duvet (instead of their standard brown blanket) and then a textured top sheet on top of the duvet. The linen themselves are not premium, there are just more of them. Thing is, if either sheet moves during the night, it's just you up against the duvet that countless other guests have used, sweat on, etc. The top sheet on one of our beds had a very clear, dark grey footprint on it (?), so we wondered if it had actually been washed between guests. And the fitted sheet on the other bed had large pink smears permanently stained onto it, right in the middle. The mattress pad underneath was also so dirty/yellowed in spots that the yellow showed through the fitted sheet. Gross. But the kicker was our fellow room guests: ANTS! We'd killed a few in the bathroom on the night we checked in, but awoke the next morning to dozens and dozens of ants scurrying back and forth along the edge of the carpet! We couldn't find where they were coming from or how they were getting in. We were VERY glad we'd taken precautions the night before: putting our shoes on top of the safe instead of on the floor, keeping all our belongings (clothes, coats, bags, toiletries) inside large Ziploc bags up on the desk/luggage rack, etc. I suppose, given the crumbs we saw, it really shouldn't have been that surprising that ants would find the buffet. And, apparently, ants in a premium room *isn't* surprising to the hotel staff, either: as soon as we saw the parade of ants when we turned on the lights at 6:30am, we immediately rushed to pack up and checked out just after 7am, at which time I brought the issue to the attention of the front-desk attendant. She just shrugged and matter-of-factly said, "Oh, sorry about that. We had rain yesterday, and when there's rain, we get ants." ????????? How is that an appropriate response? "Yeah, we get ants"? Would the reaction have been the same if, say, rats come in when it rains? "Yeah, sorry about the rats. We get those in bad weather." Are tiny armies of ants *that* common an occurrence that the hotel has become that blasé about INSECTS IN THE ROOMS? Keep in mind, this was November, not July. Bugs finding their way into a room at an outdoor-hallway hotel in summer would make a little more sense, but it was barely 8ºC/46ºF outside. Admittedly, the Red Roof Plus is considered a "budget" hotel, so we don't expect a four-star experience, but at what is now $100+ per night (!) for a "premium" room (in the off-season, no less), it's hardly a bargain. The property itself isn't bad, and it's in a handy location, so I have no idea why they don't bother to improve their housekeeping -- the hotel could be a great hidden gem if it were just a whole lot cleaner and better cared for. This time, we really won't be returning.
