Only stay here if you want a contact high! Terrible Corporate Guest Relations, too!
January 17, 2019

First of all, I should preface this with the fact that I teach in a Tourism program at a college and have many years of customer service experience, some of which is in Tourism. I've never experienced anything like this situation in my life and never hope to again. We booked two nights at this Red Roof Inn--one on each leg of our trip--because they allow pets. Note that there are signs all over the hotel stating that it is 100% smoke-free, and my reservation indicated that, too. The first night, after checking in and walking next door for dinner, we returned to find both floors of the hotel full of the smell of pot. The receptionists didn't seem too surprised, but they both assured me they would look into it. One even said he had an idea of who it was and would knock on some doors. One of them (David, I believe) seemed exasperated by the situation and told us this ¨wasn't common¨. I expressed my concern about the fact that we were traveling with an elderly cat with lots of health issues and the fact that even the smell of pot can cause problems for animals. He assured us that the rooms where people smoke are taken out of service until they are cleaned. Well, we arrived there again, at 2 am several days later, after driving 13 hours, and this time the entire lobby, both floors, and our room reeked of pot. I was livid! I requested to change rooms, which David honored. It seemed ok until I turned on the heat, and the smell of pot filled the room again. I immediately called the Hampton Inn across the street and booked a room there. Then, I told David we were leaving and informed him that he was not to charge my credit card. At the Hampton Inn, they told me that the Red Roof has this problem all the time. Apparently, the Hampton now charges locals a smoking fee up front, because they like to stay overnight at hotels and smoke all night. However, the Red Roof Inn has not been successful in enforcing their 100% smoke-free policy. I went back to the Red Roof the following morning to make sure we would not be charged. Chris was at the reception desk and was very nice. Unlike the other receptionists, she did not lie. She admitted this was a problem and that they were at their wits end trying to enforce it. I asked if she could do anything about the price the first night, and she agreed to refund me a little over $20. (Not even enough to pay for the difference we had to pay for the night at the Hampton Inn, which was $40.) I asked if I could call the Guest Relations number that David had given me to see if they could give me any more than that, and she said yes. When we arrived home, I contacted Guest Relations for Red Roof Inn. The first written response I received was nothing more than a glorified apology and assurances that steps had been put in place to ensure this would not happen in the future, but it did not tell me what those steps are, and I, frankly, don't care. There was no mention of refunding any more money, so I wrote again. The second response just apologized that they were not able to make me happy. I tried fighting this on my credit card and was told that MasterCard rules state that I would have had to have never actually stayed at the hotel--essentially walked out upon arrival--in order to qualify for a refund. However, when we arrived and checked in that first night, there was no problem! Unfortunately, this was my first and last experience with Red Roof Inns. If they are that apathetic to the problem, then the least I can do is spread the word. Meanwhile, I still want full compensation for not upholding what is, technically, a contract. They did not provide the service I was told I would receive, and this put our health, as well as that of our kitty, at risk.

One of the good ones

Red Roof Inn can be a toss up sometimes. Either it lives up to its reputation as a very good economy brand hotel, or you end up at one of those locations that gives it a bad name. As a Red Roof Plus, I would have a higher expectation, and this location in Poughkeepsie delivered. The bed was comfortable and the room was clean. The internet worked well. Golden Corral (finally open) is right next door! Staff could have been more upbeat (esp in the morning). Note, I am not saying more friendly, I am saying more upbeat. This is the hospitality industry.

Better Choices Nearby

We stayed for two nights in a first floor room. The room was presented to us as suitable for disabled people. It was not. The only bar installed was in the /bath shower. There was no bar next to the toilet. The shower was not roll-in as advertised. A telling sign was that the peep hole in the door was too high to be of any use for a person in a wheelchair. The room was noisy from people moving around late at night in the second floor room above us and in the corridor. I suspect there were longer stay residents with children at the property. We noticed that a school bus stopped there.. After two nights, we moved to another location. There are lots of motels/hotels around. We easily found a better place to stay. The room was larger, much quieter, and was just a little more expensive, with a much better breakfast included.

Not what we expected

We stayed here about 2 years ago and were very happy. We chose to come back for one night and were very disappointed. The room we had ,(324), had ants in it. Not that many, but enough to give us the creeps. I advised management about it so I am hoping it is taken care of. Would like to return as this is in a good location for us.

Absolutely Disgusting.. Never Again
September 03, 2018

I never write reviews but this time I felt inclined to warn people about this hotel. I had been driving all day and decided to stop at the Red Roof Inn for the night and planned on continuing my drive the following morning. Before I even arrived at my room I noticed that the hallways had a musty/mildew odor. When I arrived in my room things appeared to be relatively clean but upon closer inspection I was mortified. After entering my room I immediately noticed that the room had the same odor as the hallway only it was 10 times stronger. Next, the carpet in the room felt wet when I walked on it so I bent down to see if something had spilled and the carpet had the most disgusting odor coming from it. It smelled like a dead animal was entrapped in the carpet. The lady at the front desk had been extremely unpleasant when I checked-in and I was exhausted so I decided to just deal with the awful smell as opposed to arguing with her about getting put into a new room. In the morning at around 7 am, I woke up to someone pounding on the door next to mine and screaming for at least 10 minutes. I’m not sure if it was another guest or the employees pounding on the door but regardless it was out of control. I couldn’t fall back to sleep so I decided to get up, shower, and be on my way. I walked into the bathroom to shower and I noticed the floor of the shower was FILTHY with hair and god knows what else (I’ve attached photos below). I guess what was most disturbing was the fact that the maids put clean towels and toiletries on the side of the tub and pulled the shower curtain wide open when prepping the room. Meaning they looked right at the filthy tub and just said screw it we don’t feel like cleaning it! But yet they placed the towels and toiletries there expecting that someone would actually shower in that mess. Again, I considered asking for another room but at this point I figured it was pointless to ask for a new room just to take a shower. I left with basically no sleep, and no shower- two of the main purposes of a hotel. I understand that the maids can’t really do anything about the smell in the rooms but I am so concerned about their decision to not clean out that shower. It makes me think the sheets were probably not changed either..laziness. Nevertheless, this will be last time staying at the Red Roof.
