I visit a friend on this stretch of Route 9 fairly often & Red Roof is, by far, the least expensive motel in the area. That's the good news! Although I have had some acceptable stays there, twice, there have been strong, unpleasant odors in the room assigned to me. Both were on the first floor. The first time, the room smelled like a wet dog. The second, like strong, perfume-y air freshener (perhaps to mask pet odor?). I reported, the first time, at the desk & was told they were sold out. The second time, I didn't bother, since the woman at the desk had already told me they were over-booked for the night. When I mentioned the odor at check-out, I was told it might have been incense from the previous guest. It didn't smell like incense to me, but, even if that had been the case, the maid should have noticed the odor, aired the room, & the room should not have been assigned until the odor had dissipated. The room was clean enough & everything worked. Bed was ok. I consider the breakfast mediocre, so I don't bother with it. My recommendation--If you need a room in the area, do not stay on the first floor, where the pet rooms are located. So far, I haven't had a problem, except with first floor rooms.

We were visiting both the Culinary Institute of America restaurants and FDR's birthplace and wanted a reasonably priced hotel near to these attractions. We found that in this hotel. Yes, it is a budget hotel. I believe that is how it advertises itself . We did pick it for price and location. It's true that it's dingy and not beautifully decorated and not at all's true that the lobby is small... it's true that the breakfast offerings were not as extensive as we have experienced at more expensive hotels...BUT... I thought we got great value . The king sized bed, the linens, and the pillows were wonderfully comfortable. The bathroom had large, fluffy towels.... and the room had everything you could iron....a TV... a refrigerator...a safe...a coffee maker. The room was clean . The water was hot . The internet worked better than at some other places we've been. There were plenty of outlets both on the desk and by the bed so multiple items could be plugged in. You get what you pay for. We paid about $150 for two nights, which I thought was fair. For those who need a handicapped accessible room, I think our room would have been a good choice. There were multiple grab bars on both walls of the tub and a plastic chair besides the tub. Doorways were large, and the floor spare was relatively bare. We didn't experience any of the issues named above by less satisfied customers . The desk staff was friendly and polite and even printed out directions for us . The only minor inconvenience was that the message light flashed all night both nights even though theres no message and even though the desk turned it off when we asked. It didn't interfere with our sleep. There is plenty of parking, and the hotel is pet friendly as well. It is conveniently located on Rt. 9, right next to a Golden Corral, so if you need a meal you can walk 30 seconds next door, and very close to other restaurants as well (Texas Roadhouse, for one).

Pot smell, musty...cold shower

Over all good until night, turned on heat and smelled of must/mildew, shower hot water lasted about 10 min. Then came out of bathroom to roomed that smelt overwhelmingly strong of pot/weed and pretty sure whole family got a contact high. Washer leaked all over floor and in front of vending machine, 2 hr later after I told maid it still wasn't cleaned. Won't be back, wish I would have paid the extra $30 for the Hampton in the same lot.

Entering the lobby the set up is awkward. The lobby and breakfast room dismal and sad. Dated, old, depressing. Carpeting up the stairwell worn and dirty. Rooms very basic. Beds were comfortable. Floors needed a good sweeping. Police showed up but quickly left. Would not stay again. Very uncomfortable stay.

Only stay here if you want a contact high! Terrible Corporate Guest Relations, too!

First of all, I should preface this with the fact that I teach in a Tourism program at a college and have many years of customer service experience, some of which is in Tourism. I've never experienced anything like this situation in my life and never hope to again. We booked two nights at this Red Roof Inn--one on each leg of our trip--because they allow pets. Note that there are signs all over the hotel stating that it is 100% smoke-free, and my reservation indicated that, too. The first night, after checking in and walking next door for dinner, we returned to find both floors of the hotel full of the smell of pot. The receptionists didn't seem too surprised, but they both assured me they would look into it. One even said he had an idea of who it was and would knock on some doors. One of them (David, I believe) seemed exasperated by the situation and told us this ¨wasn't common¨. I expressed my concern about the fact that we were traveling with an elderly cat with lots of health issues and the fact that even the smell of pot can cause problems for animals. He assured us that the rooms where people smoke are taken out of service until they are cleaned. Well, we arrived there again, at 2 am several days later, after driving 13 hours, and this time the entire lobby, both floors, and our room reeked of pot. I was livid! I requested to change rooms, which David honored. It seemed ok until I turned on the heat, and the smell of pot filled the room again. I immediately called the Hampton Inn across the street and booked a room there. Then, I told David we were leaving and informed him that he was not to charge my credit card. At the Hampton Inn, they told me that the Red Roof has this problem all the time. Apparently, the Hampton now charges locals a smoking fee up front, because they like to stay overnight at hotels and smoke all night. However, the Red Roof Inn has not been successful in enforcing their 100% smoke-free policy. I went back to the Red Roof the following morning to make sure we would not be charged. Chris was at the reception desk and was very nice. Unlike the other receptionists, she did not lie. She admitted this was a problem and that they were at their wits end trying to enforce it. I asked if she could do anything about the price the first night, and she agreed to refund me a little over $20. (Not even enough to pay for the difference we had to pay for the night at the Hampton Inn, which was $40.) I asked if I could call the Guest Relations number that David had given me to see if they could give me any more than that, and she said yes. When we arrived home, I contacted Guest Relations for Red Roof Inn. The first written response I received was nothing more than a glorified apology and assurances that steps had been put in place to ensure this would not happen in the future, but it did not tell me what those steps are, and I, frankly, don't care. There was no mention of refunding any more money, so I wrote again. The second response just apologized that they were not able to make me happy. I tried fighting this on my credit card and was told that MasterCard rules state that I would have had to have never actually stayed at the hotel--essentially walked out upon arrival--in order to qualify for a refund. However, when we arrived and checked in that first night, there was no problem! Unfortunately, this was my first and last experience with Red Roof Inns. If they are that apathetic to the problem, then the least I can do is spread the word. Meanwhile, I still want full compensation for not upholding what is, technically, a contract. They did not provide the service I was told I would receive, and this put our health, as well as that of our kitty, at risk.
